Asphyxia neonatorum - assessment of the infant at birth
Asphyxia neonatorum is defined as failure of a newborn infant to establish sustained respiration after its complete delivery. In 206 asphyxiated infants reviewed, details of the Apgar scores, time to sustained respiration and resuscitation required, were documented. The value of each of these observations, as well as that of the heart rate and acid-base status after birth, is assessed. From the findings definite recommendations for the routine assessment of the infant at birth are made.S. Afr. Med. J., 48, 2139 (1974)
Factors affecting diet, habitat selection and breeding success of the African Crowned Eagle Stephanoaetus coronatus in a fragmented landscape
This study aimed to identify variables that affect habitat selection and nesting success of the African Crowned Eagle Stephanoaetus coronatus, the largest forest raptor, in north-eastern South Africa. A preference for nesting in the Northern Mistbelt Forest vegetation type was established and 82% of all nests were located in indigenous trees. Nest abandonment was less common when distances to the nearest neighbour were greater. The diet of this species was investigated by examination of prey remains beneath nests and verified by comparison with museum specimens. In total, 156 remains were found, representing a minimum of 75 prey individuals. The diet of African Crowned Eagles constituted almost entirely mammals (99%), which were predominantly antelopes (61%) and monkeys (25%). It was also found that the proportion of primates in the diet correlates with latitude: populations in equatorial latitudes have a higher proportion of primates in their diets, whereas further south antelopes are a much more common diet component
Neuronal circuitry for pain processing in the dorsal horn
Neurons in the spinal dorsal horn process sensory information, which is then transmitted to several brain regions, including those responsible for pain perception. The dorsal horn provides numerous potential targets for the development of novel analgesics and is thought to undergo changes that contribute to the exaggerated pain felt after nerve injury and inflammation. Despite its obvious importance, we still know little about the neuronal circuits that process sensory information, mainly because of the heterogeneity of the various neuronal components that make up these circuits. The test characteristics of head circumference measurements for pathology associated with head enlargement: a retrospective cohort study
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The test characteristics of head circumference (HC) measurement percentile criteria for the identification of previously undetected pathology associated with head enlargement in primary care are unknown.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Electronic patient records were reviewed to identify children age 3 days to 3 years with new diagnoses of intracranial expansive conditions (IEC) and metabolic and genetic conditions associated with macrocephaly (MGCM). We tested the following HC percentile threshold criteria: ever above the 95<sup>th</sup>, 97<sup>th</sup>, or 99.6<sup>th </sup>percentile and ever crossing 2, 4, or 6 increasing major percentile lines. The Centers for Disease Control and World Health Organization growth curves were used, as well as the primary care network (PCN) curves previously derived from this cohort.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Among 74,428 subjects, 85 (0.11%) had a new diagnosis of IEC (n = 56) or MGCM (n = 29), and between these 2 groups, 24 received intervention. The 99.6<sup>th </sup>percentile of the PCN curve was the only threshold with a PPV over 1% (PPV 1.8%); the sensitivity of this threshold was only 15%. Test characteristics for the 95th percentiles were: sensitivity (CDC: 46%; WHO: 55%; PCN: 40%), positive predictive value (PPV: CDC: 0.3%; WHO: 0.3%; PCN: 0.4%), and likelihood ratios positive (LR+: CDC: 2.8; WHO: 2.2; PCN: 3.9). Test characteristics for the 97th percentiles were: sensitivity (CDC: 40%; WHO: 48%; PCN: 34%), PPV (CDC: 0.4%; WHO: 0.3%; PCN: 0.6%), and LR+ (CDC: 3.6; WHO: 2.7; PCN: 5.6). Test characteristics for crossing 2 increasing major percentile lines were: sensitivity (CDC: 60%; WHO: 40%; PCN: 31%), PPV (CDC: 0.2%; WHO: 0.1%; PCN: 0.2%), and LR+ (CDC: 1.3; WHO: 1.1; PCN: 1.5).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Commonly used HC percentile thresholds had low sensitivity and low positive predictive value for diagnosing new pathology associated with head enlargement in children in a primary care network.</p

Foreground modelling via Gaussian process regression: An application to HERA data
The key challenge in the observation of the redshifted 21-cm signal from
cosmic reionization is its separation from the much brighter foreground
emission. Such separation relies on the different spectral properties of the
two components, although, in real life, the foreground intrinsic spectrum is
often corrupted by the instrumental response, inducing systematic effects that
can further jeopardize the measurement of the 21-cm signal. In this paper, we
use Gaussian Process Regression to model both foreground emission and
instrumental systematics in hours of data from the Hydrogen Epoch of
Reionization Array. We find that a simple co-variance model with three
components matches the data well, giving a residual power spectrum with white
noise properties. These consist of an "intrinsic" and instrumentally corrupted
component with a coherence-scale of 20 MHz and 2.4 MHz respectively (dominating
the line of sight power spectrum over scales h
cMpc) and a baseline dependent periodic signal with a period of
MHz (dominating over h cMpc) which should
be distinguishable from the 21-cm EoR signal whose typical coherence-scales is
MHz

A Comparison of Oral feeding and total parenteral nutrition in infants of very low birthweight
A controlled trial of total parenteral nutrition (TPN) was conducted in 86 infants weighing less than 1 500 g. There was no significant difference in neonatal mortality and morbidity between those receiving TPN and the controls who were fed 'humanised' milk by continuous nasogastric drip. There was an over-all reduction in neonatal mortality for which modern intensive care techniques and skilled nursing care were largely responsible. A place for TPN exists in the management of the sick, low birthweight infant, where feeding by oral route is contra-indicated and nutritional support is temporarily desired. The adaptation of this important technique to low birthweight infants is discussed.S. Afr. Med. J., 48, 2169 (1974)
